What Happens on the Day of a VAD?
When your loved one has passed away following voluntary assisted dying, the doctor or appropriate medical practitioner will attend and confirm the passing.
Once this has occurred, the family can contact Farewell Cremations on 0403 136 250 when they are ready for us to bring their loved one into our care.
There is no need to call us immediately if the family would like some private time together first.
You can spend the time you need with your loved one and call us when you feel ready for the transfer to take place.
The VAD medical team will usually provide the documentation required following the death, and Farewell Cremations will take care of the funeral and cremation arrangements from that point.

What Happens After Farewell Cremations Brings My Loved One Into Care?
Once your loved one is in our care, we take care of the arrangements for you.
We understand that one of the benefits of planning a voluntary assisted dying cremation in advance is knowing what will happen afterwards. For this reason, we keep the family informed as the arrangements progress.
We will advise you when:

A cremation can usually take place approximately 2–3 days after the passing, subject to the required documentation and crematorium availability.

Where Do I Collect the Ashes?

What Is Voluntary Assisted Dying?
Voluntary assisted dying, commonly referred to as VAD, is a legal end-of-life option available to eligible people in Western Australia.
It allows an eligible person with an advanced and progressive medical condition to access medication that enables them to legally choose the timing and circumstances of their death.
Voluntary assisted dying became available in Western Australia on 1 July 2021 under the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2019.

Who Is Eligible for Voluntary Assisted Dying in WA?
There are specific legal eligibility requirements.
Among other requirements, a person must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Meet the applicable Australian citizenship or permanent residency requirements
- Have ordinarily lived in Western Australia for at least 12 months
- Have an advanced and progressive disease, illness or medical condition that will cause death
- Be expected to die within six months, or within 12 months for a neurodegenerative condition
- Be experiencing suffering that cannot be relieved in a way the person considers tolerable
- Have decision-making capacity in relation to VAD
- Be acting voluntarily and without coercion
- Have an enduring request to access voluntary assisted dying

How Does the VAD Process Work in WA?
A person cannot simply request VAD once and immediately proceed. The Western Australian process contains a number of safeguards.
A person must be independently assessed as eligible by two appropriately qualified medical practitioners.
